ribboncuttingFollowing their 2001 graduation from a four year Oriental Medical Program at Southwest Acupuncture College in New Mexico, Lisa and Torrey Gorla moved to Rhode Island and opened a clinic where they practiced for two years.  The harsh Northeast winters and family living in North Carolina, drew them to the Blue Ridge Mountains.  They moved to Boone, and Torrey practiced in a small holistic health center.  By 2004, their practice had expanded, and they moved into their office space on Shadowline Drive as Blue Ridge Acupuncture and Herb Center.  As they continued to add more laboratory medicine to their practice, they became Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Natural Medicine and continued to grow as the moved into a new office suite on State Farm Road in 2011.

DSC_0380Early in 2013, Torrey completed his Naturopathic Medicine Degree (N.M.D) at the American Naturopathic Medical Institute, and the practice further expanded its scope and treatment options.  Torrey’s specialty is determining the root cause of health problems via Chinese and modern diagnostics.  Treatment methods include acupuncture, bio-identical hormones, Chinese Herbal Medicine and nutritional therapies.  Further assessments can be accomplished with salivary hormone testing, thorough blood work, and gastrointestinal stool testing.

The practice was honored to be voted the Watauga Democrat’s Best of the Best Acupuncture Clinic in the spring of 2013.  Later that same year, the practice added a Physical Medicine Division with Dr. Michael Hoilien, Doctor of Osteopathy, as the Medical Director.  Shelly Shuford also joined the practice as the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).  The Physical Medicine Division focuses on resolving physical pain syndromes with services such as joint and trigger point injections, headache protocols, Medical Weight Loss, Lipo-Light Weight Loss Program, ALCAT Food Allergy Testing, and Posture Support.

These additions have transformed the practice to further blend the best of Eastern and Western modalities to offer the most comprehensive and effective care for patients.  Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Natural Medicine, along with its Integrative Health Division, is now Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health.  It is the only practice in the High Country using the combined team approach with specialized Eastern and Western medical practitioners on staff.  With Torrey’s advanced training and integrative clinicians now part of the practice, Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health continues to be much more than a just an acupuncture clinic.
